Dangerous on wet/slippery rock
These shoes are very comfortable! Unfortunately they are dangerous on wet or slippery rocks. We went to Belize and did some rock/cave hiking and I almost had to take them off. My Merrill's were a lot better the day before (got wet) and I wish I would have worn them even though wet. These could have been great hiking shoes except for this huge flaw. They didn't test them?

Good shoe overall, small complaints-but great for outdoors in mud
I bought these shoes the last day before a 3 week trip that would include hiking in a jungle rainforest. For the rainforest hiking they held up great, for anything with mud or dirt or leaves, etc...they were very good. They are also good looking sturdy shoes that had a few stitches coming lose on one the the stripes on the side, but nothing worse than that.
Nevertheless, I am picky about shoes (which is why I took so long buying them...last day, not ideal) and I have big feet and wear an in-between size in most brands 13 1/2 that most companies don't make when the sizes get that big. I also have pretty flat feet and so Merrell (spelling?) shoes have too high of arches for me, as do Nike when it comes to athletic shoes.
So, one thing is they are kind of heavy. They have thick Vibram soles with heavy lugs, but some weight reduction would have been nice, I wouldn't call them particularly "light-hikers." Next, they are a little stiff and I would like more flexibility...
Good choice.
Very durable/water proof on the outside and comfortable on the inside. It took about three days to get them to break in and flex naturaly. Great traction/grip on all surfaces...so far. Easy to slip on and off while still staying snug to my feet.
